Grower Survey Results
Cleanfarms commissioned two rounds of grower surveys in select agricultural regions as part of the Building a Zero Plastics Waste Strategy for Agriculture initiative. The results highlight findings that are relevant to the pilot projects that Cleanfarms initiated for a variety of agricultural plastics. The goal of the research was to gain insights into current and comparative disposal habits of farmers using ag plastics.
2020/2021
The 2020/2021 grower survey results serve as a benchmark for grower attitudes and practices around ag plastics management prior to the implementation of new pilot projects. Benchmarking serves as an important best practice and management tool within both the agricultural and the recycling sectors.

2023/2024
The 2023/2024 survey reassessed behaviours and attitudes of growers after the implementation of pilot projects and allowed for concept testing. Results also contribute to on-going benchmarking efforts as pilots evolve.

Key Findings & Analysis
- When recycling programs are made available, farmers will overwhelmingly use them over other means.
- Overall, farmers are more satisfied when they can recycle an ag plastic versus other disposal methods like landfilling.
- Disposal habits generally reflect the availability and maturity of recycling programs in a region.
- There is a strong appetite amongst farmers to participate in pilots for recycling ag plastics.
- There is concern about potential costs associated with more permanent, long term recycling programs.
