Next-stage innovative thinking about circularity in Canadian agriculture.
It starts here.
Single-use plastics in Canada’s agricultural sector:
It’s a growing reality and a solvable problem.
As a thought leader on innovation in this vital sector, Cleanfarms has launched a new white paper, called Circular Economy for Canadian Agriculture: Better for Business, Better for Canada.
This is our latest thinking as a 15-year old organization dedicated to providing meaningful leadership in agricultural plastic recycling and recovery in Canada, and contributing to achieving a sustainable future.
New Tote Packaging from Recycled Ag Plastics
Cleanfarms, McKenzieIBC/Snyder, and BASF have collaborated on a circular economy solution for refillable Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) after their typical 10-year lifespan. The main challenge was ensuring that the recovered plastic (post-consumer resin, or PCR) could meet the UN standards for dangerous goods packaging. After years of R&D and the help of the BASF Plastics Additives group, the bases of new IBCs can now be made with up to 100% PCR from old containers.
This project exemplifies the circular economy in several ways: a reusable/refillable packaging format; use of circular PCR; and through its new ferrous-free design for recyclability. Thanks to the leadership and commitment of BASF Agriculture Canada, these IBCs will be deployed across farm fields starting in 2026. The next step is investigating the use of post-consumer resin in the tank itself, moving toward a fully circular IBC.
Making the business case for circularity
Circularity is about a shift in multiple ways. As our white paper makes clear…
Bringing more of the circular economy to Canadian agriculture is about more than just an environmental necessity. Coordinated action in this area makes good business sense, too.
Learn more about the challenge and opportunity of circularity. This white paper makes the case with five compelling arguments, backed by the latest research.
