2025 marks 15 years of Cleanfarms working hand in hand with farmers and the agricultural industry across Canada to promote sustainability by offering programs to keep used ag plastic waste out of landfills and the environment. Our programs are supported by partnerships coast-to-coast, including a network of ag industries, ag retailers, municipalities, and growers’ groups.

Collections of pesticide containers start up in Alberta with CropLife Canada
1998
First collections of obsolete pesticides
2009
Expanded obsolete collection program to included animal health medications
2010
Inception of Cleanfarms
2013
Program expands to collect fertilizer containers

Another expansion: bulk pesticide containers
2016
Addition of empty seed bag collection throughout maritime provinces

Grain bags included for recycling in Saskatchewan’s program via regulation
2018
Bulk fertilizer containers added to Quebec collection program
2020
Pilot program to recover seed, pesticide and inoculant bags across prairie provinces
2021
Manitoba grain bags and twine recycling now a permanent program.
2022
Permanent ag plastics recycling becomes available (PEI).
2023
Permanent maple tubing and ag plastics programs are now available in Quebec.

Our members provide funding support for every full-time program that we offer; most of which have been made possible on a voluntary basis. Recently, many newer members have joined through their association with regulated programs in their province. We are grateful to all members for their support and commitment to providing meaningful programs that enable farmers to manage waste from their operations in a sustainable way.
